Occupational Health & Safety
Come Home Safe
At Metro, we believe that the health, safety and the well-being of our work family is vital to the continued success of the company. Nothing is more important than ensuring we all get back home safe and healthy to our loved ones at the end of each day.
Safety is non-negotiable and zero harm is a worthy goal to pursue.
Safety is at the core of everything we do. We promote and foster a culture where people truly care about one another and where everyone shares in our goal of zero incidents. It is for this reason we have the Journey to Zero Harm campaign to remind us of the goal and the fact it is not a quick fix.
Health, safety and environment focuses on uncompromised safety core values, personal commitment and a passionate belief in achieving zero injuries. We look to achieve this through frontline leadership, positive recognition, safe work behaviors, and accountability at all levels.

We commit to this vision of causing zero-harm by ensuring:
- No job or task is so urgent or critical so as to endanger an individual
- We watch out for one another by fostering a people centered focus
- We make informed decisions based on reviewing every task with structured planning
- We will only proceed where hazards are identified and suitable risk controls are established
- We follow safety instructions and ensure these are adequate and appropriate
- Non-essential and complex processes that hinder safety are eliminated and ensure the right standards and controls are established and staff have the knowledge, skills and supervision to follow them
- Anything unsafe is addressed swiftly and without delay
- Our behavior and accountability planning plays an essential role in a positive safety culture, both on and off-the-job
- We embrace change and foster the ethos of always being part of the solution in safety initiatives
Change is good!
We recognize that our people are our most valuable asset, and we are dedicated to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all. We continually seek innovative ways to enhance our safety practices and collaborate with our trade partners to adopt a mindset that prioritizes uncompromising safety in the workplace through a robust Health & Safety Program, achieved with the assistance of our Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, and regular Toolbox Meetings.
We are Certificate of Recognition (BC Construction Safety Alliance) and SAFE (BC Forest Sector) certified. However, we believe we need to continuously improve, and as a result, we embrace the Japanese management concept of Kaizen (Change for Good) and the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle, which complement one another as these are based on Continuous Improvement under the principles of CSA Z45001, the Canadian standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and ISO 45001 international standard.
We have evolved our safety practices by embracing technology both in the office and on the job site, and we utilize both internally developed apps and external software solutions to unify our systems and processes across the entire organization. Our Safety & Innovation team are constantly updating the features and functionality of our internal apps, which give users the ability to submit risk assessments in real-time, and provides for a faster review process to ensure work can proceed safely when hazards are identified. We take pride in the knowledge that our apps facilitate effortless data production, making the worksite and METRO’s role on-site safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective for everyone.
