Our History

Our company was established in 1987 in Burnaby, British Columbia, by a small group of passionate, entrepreneurial materials technicians, led by Harry Watson, who wanted to provide a more customer-centric approach to the materials testing needs of the construction industry.

Over the years, our company has been known as Metro Testing Laboratories, Canadian Construction Materials Engineering and Testing (CCMET), and now as Metro Testing & Engineering, as part of Equicapita's group of companies. We now have over 250 employees at 11 branch offices throughout British Columbia and Alberta. Our head office, conveniently located in the Cariboo Industrial Park in Burnaby just off Gaglardi Way, provides quick and easy access to Highway 1 and Lougheed Highway.

We are the largest materials testing company in British Columbia, combining our testing services with materials engineering and other technical disciplines such as geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, and concrete restoration services.

Our Guiding Principles help instil our values and culture: People, Integrity, Commitment, Communication, Teamwork, and Guidance. These six principles are proudly displayed in every branch office, where our employees have signed their names as a commitment to them.

Aaron Lo began his tenure at Metro in 2013. Since then, he has gained experience across multiple departments, including data entry, office administration, and dispatching. As our Corporate Health & Safety Advisor, he provides H&S support across the company and ensures that all safety activities align with approved procedures and regulatory requirements. He also monitors workplace practices to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

For Aaron, the people and collaborative culture at Metro make every day rewarding. Outside of work, he trains in Muay Thai and boxing and enjoys watching movies, whether he’s catching the latest feature in theatres or a classic at home.

Arvind leads Metro’s Environmental Consulting Team, providing expert guidance to clients, conducting detailed environmental assessments, and ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations. On a typical day, he might be identifying contamination on a proposed development site or developing remediation strategies for it. He also assists clients in implementing sustainable environmental practices and securing permits and regulatory approvals from the Ministry of Environment and Parks.

Helping clients achieve their goals is Arvind’s favourite aspect of his job. He enjoys being part of a diverse, highly skilled team and appreciates the collaboration and camaraderie within Metro’s culture.

Dustin oversees all aspects of our Fort St John branch, driving business development and revenue growth while providing technical oversight for the engineering team. He manages the branch's operations manager and office administration staff and leads HR functions to support a strong, capable team.

Dustin brings over a decade of operations and engineering leadership to Metro. He earned his CET from Okanagan College in 2008 and went on to build a diverse background in industrial operations, including roles as a Lab Supervisor and Operations Manager with Hartstone Engineering at CNRL Fort McMurray, and as a Field Operations Manager on the Site C project for Wood. Outside of work, Dustin is a father to three daughters and enjoys spending time boating and out on the water.Dustin oversees all aspects of our Fort St John branch, driving business development and revenue growth while providing technical oversight for the engineering team. Outside of work, Joshua stays active with strength training at the gym and spends time walking his two dogs, Sophie and Ollie.

Taunia is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Salmon Arm branch, managing everything from staff and dispatch to invoicing, lab work, safety, and janitorial duties. Taunia has been with Metro for 20 years, joining our team with no prior industry experience—having previously owned a local pub—and has learned everything hands-on during her time at Metro.

What Taunia enjoys most about working at Metro is the variety in her day-to-day role; no two days look the same. She also values the strong support from other branches and managers, and the sense that everyone works together as a team. She believes integrity, teamwork, and discipline are what set Metro apart, along with a genuine willingness to go above and beyond for clients. Outside of work, Taunia enjoys gardening, walking her dog along the local beach, spending time with friends, and crocheting.
