METRO TESTING + ENGINEERING ROLE:

  • Materials Testing
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Specialty Testing

Glenmore Dam was built in 1932 and since then the dam has played an integral role in Calgary’s water infrastructure system. The dam holds back the Glenmore Reservoir (a primary source of drinking water) and controls the downstream flow of the Elbow River allowing for property development near the river’s banks with less risk of flooding.

Upgrades to the dam’s infrastructure commenced in the spring of 2017 and include a new bridge deck with better access for pathway users, concrete work on the face of the dam, and steel control gates and a hoist system that form a critical part of the flood resiliency plan for the Elbow River.

The estimated completion date for the project is 2020 and the upgrades will provide for safe, clean drinking water for generations to come, improved user access to the bridge deck with a wider, more pedestrian friendly pathway and an extended lifespan for the concrete dam and bridge deck.

The upgrades will also enhance the appearance of the Glenmore Dam, an iconic structure and one of the City’s oldest landmarks.

Alberta Materials Testing & Engineering, Calgary/Metro Testing + Engineering is providing the following services for this project:

  • Geotechnical Engineering Services
  • Concrete Testing
  • Grout Testing
  • Compaction Testing
  • Asphalt Testing
  • Laboratory Testing (proctors, sieves, grout settlement)

The overall cost for the repairs and upgrades to the Glenmore Dam is estimated at $81m.
